Exploring PDX

Mock Crest Tavern

Feb 28, 2005 by josh |
Day 362

Wanted to spend my last week going to new venues in town. I have grown attracted to the Blues in the last year and thought to pursue some of those as well. So off to Mock Crest Tavern on Lombard. Home of the Portland blues I think it said. Small place that has a back yard which from photos looks like a cool summer venue. Mark Anderson was playing slide and steel guitar. Enjoyed his music and chatted with him briefly at the end. He is off to LV for a month tour.

Bag pipes

Feb 27, 2005 by josh |
Day 361

Stumbled apon a solo bag pipe player on the way back from Seattle. Now this was interesting to me as it was almost a year ago when on St. Patrick Day while listening to some bag pipes the decision was made to pursue this year long goal of live music every day for a year. I was already in 16 days be then and was just actually at the time thinking of only going 128. Well, today is Day 361 and a year is but a few days away. Of course this morning I started to feel crappy. Losing my voice and not up to wanting to do anything. The Bag Pipes sounded great. Solo performer out in a field echoing against the surrounding buildings.

Xavier Rudd

Feb 26, 2005 by josh |
Day 360

Journey up to Seattle to see one of my favorite new artist in the last year. Xavier Rudd comes from Australia and plays solo. He is just excited to be there and performs with great energy. Was happy to see him again. The opening dual Nine Nails played guitar and the Peruvian Box. Good music as well and when they all played a little at the end enjoyed that as well.
As for Seattle there always seems to be an edge in that town. Folks just not friendly and some just a bit forceful with everything they do. It is an odd thing to see shows up there when no one appears to be enjoying themselves and gets upset at everyone around them.

Beale St. NW

Feb 25, 2005 by josh |
Day 359

Headed out to a new venue near the airport. Beale St. NW and heard Carlee Smith with Fountaine Bros. A good blues band in town from across the nation. Beale St. NW is an interesting place. It is an old bank remodelled. It looks like they may have even expanded the building. Strange feel to it. All clean and big. Has a decent sound and I'm sure it gets a bit more crowded then I saw as I went to the first set. They server up BBQ that I have yet to try. I'll go back out there and listen to some blues.

a little music and story telling

Feb 24, 2005 by josh |
Day 358

Chilled at Alberta St. Pub to some bluegrass/oldtime players while waiting to rendez-vous with Jay from the Willamette Week. Seems they were interested in a story and to promote music I think why not. I have a story you all get to decide weather it was worth telling. Nothing too exciting just some music for a year.
It was good to talk to some one with another point of view. Enjoyed that new information and maybe something I should have done earlier just to get more ideas. But then again I don't have to stop going to music just maybe not every day.

closing in on the end

Feb 23, 2005 by josh |
Day 357

Well, no idea if it will be the end but I do know I'm celebrating a year of live music in just over a week. Need to get things in order and see what I'm missing. The music is pretty much finished with great help from the bands. The beer is ordered and now I just need to survive the week and a bit and order some food.
As for tonight I'm going to head over the the Museum After Hours. Haven't been over their and I usually enjoy the food and the music. Besides supporting the museum is a great thing. Heck, I'm a card carrying member.

-- Well didn't make it to the Museum instead went over to the Imbibe and heard Box of Chocolates. They have one member from Freak Mountain Ramblers and the music is totally different. Jazzy. As told to me by my friend travelling with me this evening that it is cool to see members from another band playing other projects. The style changes and other music they like to perform. I agree, this is a cool thing seeing all the different styles of music that one person plays in different settings.

a little taste of Ireland

Feb 22, 2005 by josh |
Day 356

Craving a bit of an Irish stout I headed towards County Cork and had me a Murphy's Stout to accompany the Drunken Flies. A 1/2 sandwhich and soup as well. Easy night out need to get all fit and rested for the big weekends ahead.

I want some pizza

Feb 21, 2005 by josh |
Day 355

Craving Pizza I headed down to Mississippi Pizza to hear music and get a slice and a salad. Was happy to see the local guitar player there. Playing his deep blues like voice folk. Good voice. I'm trying to remember his name. Grr. Al forth, Al frank. Ah, I'm sure I'm all wrong. In either case a great local singer. I'll have to find it out and chat with him. I guess another Monday night session is in order. The MP pub has grown in the last year and is a great place. Good food, good music and liking the venue.

Bethany Village Grill

Feb 20, 2005 by josh |
Day 354

Went to see Band of Others @ Bethany Village Grill play the open mic. Not many are their on Sunday but we chatted from a distance with the band. Who asked if we wanted to play. It was open mic. Well, I volunteered my friends Marimba playing skills but no instrument in the trunk so that was out. Maybe next time. The three playing are good. The one guitar has a very interesting effects that are applied and altered throughout. Many Beattle covers without the words and played in a style that challenages you to identify it. Or maybe that is just me and not being the huge Beattle fan.

day 2 of the juice

Feb 19, 2005 by josh |
Day 353

Sweetjuice played the westside 45th St. Pub. Another night of meeting more folks and having a great time. Last show to see Kris for a month as she is off to go work in the movies for a month. Ok, assist others in the movies. Noticed for the second night they had an additional drummer and percussion. Liked that. Been liking many who have two drums or more then one percussion playing.

First of two SweetJuice

Feb 18, 2005 by josh |
Day 352

Haven't seen Sweetjuice and a while and thought to make a weekend of it. They haven't played out at Rock Creek since the rebuilding so I went out to enjoy a pint and hear one of my local favorites. Had a great time and a good turn out. Saw old friends and spread the word about the upcoming party.

Stephen Ashbrook

Feb 17, 2005 by josh |
Day 351

Went to the Imbibe to do some research and listen to Stephen Ashbrook. Since I'm going to have a party there in a couple weeks I wanted to research the place more and get a fresh look at what to expect. I still like the place and I think the party will be great. Details to be worked out.

Ron Hughes @ Bethany

Feb 16, 2005 by josh |
Day 350

I saw that Ron Hughes was playing Bethany Grill and I didn't want to drive that far. Bethany is smoke-free, has a good menu and near by. Good things. Over heard the Owner (or I thought was the owner) talking about the place and what he decided to do. Learned he has a band which explains the growth of live music that was happen. On Tuesday's there is a big Jazz open mic I that gets together. Sounds like a fun thing to attened. I'll have to do that one Tuesday night.

Zen Tricksters

Feb 15, 2005 by josh |
Day 349

Saw the Zen Tricksters for the first time at Lola's room. The crowd was really small and everyone who knew them a few years ago said they used to fill the Crystal Ballroom upstairs. I thought they were pretty good and I had a great time dancing and being silly. That is until the drama came about. Silly stuff people do.

Ron Hughes @ CPR

Feb 14, 2005 by josh |
Day 348

It is not very often that I get to hear music at CPR. I cooked up a dinner then walked down to CPR and over desert drinks sat and listened to Ron Hughes do some good covers. Was nice to be able to walk to music from the house. I don't think I've ever done that.

Johnny's Dock Tacoma

Feb 13, 2005 by josh |
Day 347

Was up in Tacoma for a V-Day event and the restaurant I was eating at had music in the lounge. So, after dinner I sat and listened to a Blues Trio. Good music at a nice place. Chilled and watched the sun go down over the water.

Accoustic Minds

Feb 12, 2005 by josh |
Day 346

Listened to Accoustic Minds down at Rock Creek. I've seen thier names around town and I've been told good things about them and had even caught small portions of their show but never sat down and listened. So, tonight I headed out to Rock Creek and over a nitro nut brown and a bite I listened. I liked them and was entertained but not blown away. Just good decent music. Two ladies upfront singing backed by 3 piece band. The voices are good just nothing that inspired me to return. I'd see them again but not seek them out.

The buds back at The Bitter End Pub

Feb 11, 2005 by josh |
Day 345

The Buds of May are back at The Bitter End Pub on Second Fridays of each month for a while. Was a delight to see them. Ran into a bunch of folks hanging out at the show. Some new folks I met and old friends. Their was this wild intoxicated girl all dressed up and looking like a hooker. She did a dance on stage in her fish stockings and short skirt. That was just all crazy. She didn't stand up too well but then again she was wearing 5 inch platform shoes. Was a crazy night something you always expect at a Buds show.

surprised in the woods

Feb 10, 2005 by josh |
Day 344

Went down to Rock Creek Tavern to chill and write and was surprise to find some great music playing. Jamey Hampton and Tim Ellis were doing a duo on guitars. Playing some old songs that were fun to sit and sing a bit. Tim Ellis is a great guitar player and a joy to hear. Jamey had a great voice and played as well. Was fun to see them up there. Obviously they had known each other for a long time. The music was really nice. It is always a treat to hear outstanding guitar playing. It really raises the bar on how you compare others.

The Waybacks

Feb 09, 2005 by josh |
Day 343

Was informed to go see The Waybacks from a variety of folks. So off to Mississippi Studios to check them out. Now the band was quite cool. Great music high energy and fun. The place for them was not good. The place was sold out to 50 people or so but that is pack sit down only. The band made you want to dance but there was no room and the people really seemed quite stuffy. Music snobbery is an odd thing to me. I like to enjoy the time and if I feel up to dancing I like to do that as well.
Still The Waybacks came highly recommended and I would pass that along. Just try to see them somewhere where you can kick off your shoes.

happy hour with Jackstraw

Feb 08, 2005 by josh |
Day 342

Went down to the Lurelthrist pub and chilled to Jackstraw. All the regulars and old friends were out to play. That was fun. Glad to see everyone out enjoying a great band at a great local pub. Seeing Jackstraw out on Tuesday was a tradition and I hope it again stays that way. Wish them the best as they continue to pursue bigger things.

Johnny Connolly

Feb 07, 2005 by josh |
Day 341

Went down to the Moon and Sixpense and caught up on some writing while listening to some Irish tunes. They had a three piece at times and were recording the show tonight it appeared. That was all good. I also ran into some old friends that were in the music business. Another great night. We chatted briefly before I had to take off but sounded like a revisit was in order to see what everyone was up to these days.

New venue

Feb 06, 2005 by josh |
Day 340

Well the ever changing hands of the Bethany Villiage Grill as it is called now surprised me with a big music listing. It was open mic at the Grill tonight and I listened to the band play with hardly anyone there. It was a dead place. Still fun as the band was good. I'll have to check them out again and see what other music they offer through the week. From what I saw it appeared that they were more jazz tunes. Tonight was taking a lot of others rock or guitar tunes and jazzing them up a bit and playing at least one guitar through fancy foot pedals for odd sounds.

Poor Richards & Biddys

Feb 05, 2005 by josh |
Day 339

Went to Poor Richards to catch the Jim Bull Experience. Jim Bull and others played all night and it was a great time. I headed over to Biddys and caught the last act of Higher Ground where they had Randel and Scraff sit in and play with them. Was another good night of music and good friends. Enjoyed learning more history about some of the band members.

HG & BOM @ Conans

Feb 04, 2005 by josh |
Day 338

Had a wonderful night with Higher Ground and The Buds of May playing a duel set. They would have two drum sets and all band members plus John on the washboard jammin' all night long. With changes to just Higher Ground and to just Buds of May doing individual sets and back together again for an amazing musical experience. Something they should do more often. Great crowd energy and everyone I talked to thought it was a great session.
On another note they both are playing my one year musical adventure party. This will be a great party adventure.

Jon Koonce @ Sweet Oregon Grill

Feb 03, 2005 by josh |
Day 337

Jon Koonce and band were rocking tonight. I enjoyed almost everything put on. Went well with my Apple Goodie and Spanish Coffee. Now why do they call it Spanish Coffee. I should look that up. Do the Spanish really drink sweet liquor filled beverages with coffee? Hmm. Anywho I really enjoyed Jon tonight and they are becoming known at SOG and the crowd is growing. All good things for him. Had a sax player tonight that did well with the rocking blues tunes being laid down in the bar.

One month to go

Feb 02, 2005 by josh |
Day 336

Well, one month left on these adventure and I'm chilling for a week. I have my big party pretty much planned and it has come together well. Excited about that. Lots of music and a fun time to be had by all.
As for tonight I saw the Rogue Bluegrass Band. I think that is their name. They are not advertised on Sweet Oregon Grills website or anywhere else I've seen but they do play from 6-9pm or so on wednesdays. So, I sat and listened over a salad, philly cheese steak and fries. I most say. I think that the fries tonight are the best in town. They were the best I've had in a long time and perhaps the best ever. Go have some fries there. They are a food group afterall. ;-)

Greenroom and songwriters

Feb 01, 2005 by josh |
Day 335

Went down to the Greenroom to see some song writers. Well, I was a bit let down again. It is odd I've come to expect a level of music and when I don't get it I'm disappointed. The two I saw were fine but just not great or having a great time. One sure seemed that way but the others was a bit put off by the music in the bar and was an odd feeling in the air.
I've decided to try to hit only happy hours for a week or so. Maybe a few night time shows on the weekends but mostly just happy hour shows.
